Knee Pain

Knee pain is the most common disabling condition, and effects nearly 10 million people in the United States. The pain can be caused by a sudden injury, an overuse injury, or by an underlying condition, such as arthritis. Symptoms most often include pain, swelling, and stiffness.

Non- Surgical Knee Pain Treatments:

Steroid Injections

If you have knee osteoarthritis, doctors can offer a variety of treatments to relieve your symptoms. One option is to inject medication into your knee. There are different types of injections, and they’re an important part of treating knee osteoarthritis for many people.

Osteoarthritis (OA) is a common form of arthritis that often affects the knees. It develops when the cartilage, the smooth covering that protects the bones in the joint, breaks down. The surface of the bones becomes damaged, causing pain, swelling, stiffness, and disability.

Injections are useful for treating flare-ups of OA pain or swelling with fluid buildup in the knee. These injections help relieve symptoms by reducing inflammation in the joint. These injections offer “very rapid” relief, usually within 24 to 48 hours. On average, the pain relief lasts from 6 to12 weeks. Often, that’s long enough to get you through a flare-up of osteoarthritis until your symptoms subside.

Hyaluronic Acid Injections

Joints are like gears, they work best if they’re well lubricated. In a healthy joint, a thick substance called synovial fluid provides lubrication, allowing bones to glide against one another. Synovial fluid acts as a shock absorber, too. In people with osteoarthritis, a critical substance in synovial fluid known as hyaluronic acid breaks down. Loss of hyaluronic acid contributes to joint pain and stiffness.

Hyaluronic acid injections help replace that loss of hyaluronic acid in the knee and can produce significant relief for patients. The treatment regimen for hyaluronic acid usually involves receiving one injection in the affected joint per week for three to five weeks.

Platelet Rich Plasma

Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) is obtained from spinning a patient’s blood in a centrifuge at high speeds. This process isolates a concentrated serum of platelets.  These platelets are then activated and re-injected into the body. Once injected in the body the platelets release growth factors which active stem cells, leading to healing of injured tissues and new tissue growth.

PRP injections are commonly used to treat the following knee conditions:

  • Osteoarthritis
  • ACL Injuries
  • Ligament sprains

When PRP is injected into the damaged area, it leads to a mild inflammatory process of the involved tendons, ligaments, and cartilage which triggers the healing process.  As a results new tissue begins to develop.  This procedure may eliminate the need for more invasive treatments, such as surgery.  Studies suggest improvement in 80-85% of pain in most patients. This procedure has been used widely by professional athletes over the last 10 years and now with expanding technology it is readily available to the general public.

Stem Cell Therapy

Mesenchymal Stem Cells can be harvested directly from other tissues in the body as well. At our clinic, we use the best product that there is to date – Umbilical Cord Tissue.  Umbilical cord tissue contains between 1,600,000 and 2,000,000 nucleated cells per sample which are about 98 x the potency of PRP and Bone Marrow stem cells. We recommend Umbilical Cord Tissue Stem Cells for patient’s that want the best results. The product that we use is minimally manipulated for best results.

Once injected into the knee, the healing process begins – cartilage, meniscus, and other tissues begin to repair and regenerate. The production of new tissue decreases inflammation and pain, but most importantly function can return and in some cases stem cell can prevent the need for surgeries.

Physical Therapy and Exercises

Physical therapy, stretching, and exercising keeps you flexible and improves strength and range of motion. Not only can it help you decrease knee pain, but it also helps you lower your odds of pain and injuries.
