Osteoarthritis (OA) is a common form of arthritis that often affects the knees. It develops when the cartilage, the smooth covering that protects the bones in the joint, breaks down. The surface of the bones becomes damaged, causing pain, swelling, stiffness, and disability.
Injections are useful for treating flare-ups of OA pain or swelling with fluid buildup in the knee. These injections help relieve symptoms by reducing inflammation in the joint. Hyaluronic Acid Injections
Joints are like gears, they work best if they’re well lubricated. In a healthy joint, a thick substance called synovial fluid provides lubrication, allowing bones to glide against one another. Synovial fluid acts as a shock absorber, too. In people with osteoarthritis, a critical substance in synovial fluid known as hyaluronic acid breaks down. Loss of hyaluronic acid contributes to joint pain and stiffness.
Hyaluronic acid injections help replace that loss of hyaluronic acid in the knee and can produce significant relief for patients. The treatment regimen for hyaluronic acid usually involves receiving one injection in the affected joint per week for three to five weeks.
Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) is obtained from spinning a patient’s blood in a centrifuge at high speeds. This process isolates a concentrated serum of platelets. These platelets are then activated and re-injected into the body. Once injected in the body the platelets release growth factors which active stem cells, leading to healing of injured tissues and new tissue growth.
